Electrical problem 79 KDX 400
i have a 1979 KDX 400 that keeps blowing head and tail lights as soon as i rev up engine. it is a 6 volt system. does anyone know what to look for to solve this issue? could it be a bad ground? also does anyone know where to buy 6v headlight bulbs for this bike?

Um, take out that 12 volt battery.
Sounds like maybe your ground could be bad. I'd also put a meter on the output of your alternator. (Is that a magneto model? Sorry; I don't know.) Also double-check the contact points in your wiring, as well as any possible rub areas (near headstock, seat area, tank, etc.) that might short to the frame. You can get some older style bulbs at auto parts stores (be careful, and make sure they're 6 volt) or you can go with Dennis Kirk or other moto-specific dealer either online or in your town.
BTW, welcome to the forums. Keep us posted!!

Dang! I didn't know they made a KDX 400. All I got to say about that is:
But seriously, try unplugging the front bulb and see if the fuse blows. If it doesn't then one of those wires has rubbed through. Try tracing all of the wires back.

This is from my KDX450 reading, so may not help ya. Headlight is a 6v 35w lamp, the tail light is a 6v 5.3w lamp.
edit: working on scanning the electrical of the 450 if that would help any.
