Default 81 KZ 750 help

Hi everyone,

I bought this bike yesterday knowing that a carb cleaning was needed as it has been sitting since august.

It takes about 10 minutes of playing with the choke and throttle before it'll idle unattended without stalling. It also backfires alot during this process. I'm assuming a carb cleaning will take care of this.

After it's all warmed up, it runs perfectly from gears 1-3. Once I get into 4-5 gears, It doesn't have much pickup. In fact, I can't even push her past 110kph at full throttle. Is this a carb issue, or should I be looking at something else?

I had to switch to reserve today after only riding 90kms. I started with a full tank and it was mostly highway driving. I know it's a relatively small tank, but this seems extremely low(I can't imagine stopping every hour for gas on a long trip). Anyone know what kind of mileage I should be getting?

Yank the rack out and do a thorough cleaning of both circuits then try it out. Set your float height while things are apart.

Welcome to the forums.

Until you've cleaned through all your jets and passages, it will likely not run worth a crap. If it doesn't have much pickup in the lower RPM's in the higher gears, your idle air screws may need an adjusting.

Also check for any vacuum leaks. Having that lack of power in the lower RPM's can also bethe cause ofa vacuum leak.

Yeah, I just got myself a kz550 and I took out the rack and dowsed it with 3 cans of carb cleaner. But my problem was that the *** I got it from did the same thing I was doing but when he was putting it back together he put one of the needles in upside down! Gas was overflowing in there like hell! But once I cleaned everything out the bike ran sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Got my hands on a fuel level gauge and the floats are set right. Cleaned out the carb 3 times now and there is no improvement.

Since you got a gauge, still not sure on what that is, what level are you playing with on the floats?
