1992 zx600-d Engine Swap . . .
Hey all,
I just got a 92 zx-600d and it turns out second gear is going. Labor alone from local shops starts at 700, so I'm thinking about a used engine/transmission assembly on ebay to swap out. It's a fairly big platform as far asI can tell (though I haven't been able to take frame measurements), andI'm wondering ifI could upgrade to a larger motor or go to afuel injected setup as opposed to my carb?
If nothing else, I would need a fuel injected 600 as there aren'tany carbed setups I can find. Do you guys think it would be better to just go ahead and spend the 1300to havesecondgear fixed, or get a 400 dollar engine/transmission assembly and bolt up the necessary additional parts? I'm also worried about how long my current engine will lastsince it has over 20000 miles on it and has been jetted andcanned.
As a side note, I'm personally very fondof the zx-600d's body style. The only other things I would need tofix to have this one in really good working order is the rear brake disc and engine temp gauge.
Thanks for any help guys,
Zac

I would contact local, state, or even national junkyards to find a good used engine asy. Fuel injection is out of the question IMO. You would have to do a ton of electrical modding/rerouting, your gas tank is incompatible, and there is no sure answer whether or not a newer engine would even bolt up without modifying the frame mounts etc.

That's cool, I figured that was likely the case with fuel injection. Anyone know anything about putting the carbedgpz 900 r engine on my frame? That bike and myne seem to use the same frame and fairing assembly from what I can tell . . . but I could be wrong. It's pretty hard to find info on anything before the 95 zx-6r.
Thanks

If you have any history on the engine you're wanting to fix; (has it been taken care of, or thrashed?) that will help answer your question regarding how,how much, and even if you want to repair it. IMHO, if it's been maintained, 20K is no big deal. I'd probably look for a good used spare, and swap out what you need. It's always nice to have a few extra parts available for subsequent repairs.
