2002 Vulcan 1500 Classic. Everything seems functional, lights etc, but the bike will not start. Turns over just fine, but will not fire. I have traced it down to no spark at any of the plugs. I have checked the max voltage and resistance of the pick - ups, the resistance of the primary and secondary windings of the coils and all is within spec. I tried another igniter/control box and still no spark.

Anyone have any suggestions at all?

Are you getting power to the coils? If its all 4 I would guess it has to be prior to the coils. Trace back and see where the signal stops, some parts can pass a test but still not function.

Also make sure you got a good ground on the system, electrical gremlins can be a biatch. Keep us posted.

A side stand or lockout issue? Something along that area will kill the ignition sequence. Good luck, sounds like you have done some good troubleshooting so far.

 

Didnt think of that, but would the starter still spin in a lockout?

lmao, can I brag about being able to read Jon? The manual that is? I did not mention anything on interpretation.

 

I hate it when "RTFM" gets pointed back at me, LOL

 

I have checked all the interlocks. Just to be sure, I also bypassed the at the ignitor level. I have power at the coils.

Now here is something interesting. I have ground on the '-' side of the coil until I turn the ignition switch on. At that point no ground and I believe that is the way it should be until the ignitor pulses the coil. However, the ignitor NEVER pulses the coil when the engine is turning over. This is the same with either coil and with the original ignitor and the new one.

I know the ignitor is getting pulses from the pickups but that is where my capability of testing ends, as I have no idea how to test the ignitor itself.
