That doesn't sound good. Could it possibly be a solenoid issue with the starter and flywheel? Where is the sound coming from and what kind of sound is it? Inside the crankcase (like a dull transmission clunk) or more of a toothy kind of kkkkkkkk? Only with starter button, or clutch engagement issues, too?

Too bad you couldn't post a sound or video clip. Then we might have a better idea what the problem is.

I had a similar incident not long ago with my 07 Nomad. Went to start it and it "thumped" hard and loud. Hit the starter again and nothing happened. Called the locals and they said check the battery. Dead as a doornail and no charger in Hades was gonna bring it back. The battery was less than a month old. New battery and I'm on the road again after a checkup. Don't know what causes it but now I start my bike in the neutral position to avoid that jerk you get at times when first cranking up. Don't know if that helps but that's my story.

Badger, the "battery was less than a month old?" That's scary. Did you check your charging system to make sure your alternator is charging? Don't want to see you stranded!

Note on batteries: Depending on if its a new bike or not, some batteries sit on a shelf for a year or 2 and then are marked and installed. Well the damage is already done at that point. My wife's bike battery was shot in less than a year with only 500 miles on it. I kept the thing maintained all the time, but then look at my bike, still the original battery after 3 and a half years. That's why I installed a kick starter on her bike..just in case.
