Florida Bill HB137
Attention Florida.
The bill, HB 137 which was born from Miami politician State Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera's ride along with local police, takes effect on October 1st, 2008. It allows police to confiscate a motor vehicle if the rider is caught speeding 30 mph over the posted limit and further penalties of jail sentences of 5 to 10 years as well as suspended motorcycle endorsement for 10 years, all depending on the number and severity of the offenses.
The bill was originally introduced to target motorcycles but a last minute amendment was made altering the law to apply to all vehicles. However, the language regarding the loss of motorcycle endorsement wasn't altered and has many motorcycle action groups concerned.
State Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera introduced the bill last November after witnessing speeding sport bikes weaving in and out of traffic as well as some riders performing stunts on Miami's highways.

This bill is still in the committees, which mean it has not passed yet. please write to your representatives to inform them of what an injustice this is an the real issues with passing a bill like this is, also let them know that riders are professionals as well and the many situations where a speed limit change, like the ones on SR16, can be an excuse for an officer to take advantage of a situation and throw someone in jail and ruin their life with a jail record. The
Representatives who voted for it:

RE: Florida Bill HB137
I hate to say it guys and gals, but this is what happens when: 1. Stupid people do stupid crap onpublic roads, 2. Cops get tired of informing next of kin about their son or daughter being mashed like a potato for no good reason, 3. Politiciansare held accountable to act upon public safety issues.
I'm not saying laws like these are good; they won't prevent stupid people from acting consistently with their IQ. However,if you ride with people whobehave a few deviations below their IQ, tell them to knock it off, or simply stop riding with them. Act like an adult and you'll likely be treatedaccordingly.
End of sermon.

This is a quote from another forum
Jeff i agree with you on what you posted. my problem with such a law is that it will actually create a more dangerous mentality within the riders that already don’t care about speeding or doing stunts on the highway. Also it the fact that this law is targeted towards the biker community, I am from south florida, and I can tell you from experience that drivers and bikers have no respect for the speed limit, or even heard of a turn signal. You get cut off like crazy and when you are driving you are forced to speed to keep up with traffic or you will get an a-hole on your tail flashing lights and honking
All laws like this do is insure that most people are just gonna accelerate when the cops pull out behind them. Lets see I'm gonna loose my bike and go to jail if I pull over or I can twist the grip a little more and maybe get away, even if I don't at least the state of florida won't get any money at auction for my bike if its totaled

there is no justification for them to single out motorcycles. when a motorcycle crashes they pretty much always are the only one physicly hurt. when a car crashes they can hurt everyone around them. so why would you be able to lose a motorcycle endorsement but not a regular drivers liscense.
without the obvious targeting of motorcycles its not that disimilar from california and virginia law
