Default DOT or Snell

I'm looking to buy a new helmet. I've always been told that Snell rated was what you should get. So I've been doing a bit of looking online and I come across this.

http://motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/hatz/

It seems to make sense to me. Now I'm thinking about getting a DOT only certified helmet. What do you all ride with? What have you seen? What do you know? What do you think about that article?

I wear shoei helmets and they are approved by both. Now remember when it comes to your head and extra $150 is a little price to pay. You dont need a high end helmet like shoei, but make sure u get one approved by both and most important, it has to look cool. j/k Icon makes a good helmet at a great price. I just like how the shoei fits and looks.

Right, ive always thought that snell was better. But this article indicates that a Snell might increase your chance of a serious injury.

I have a Shark helmet - it is DOT and ECE approved. In my opinion that is adequate for the type of riding that I do. Now if I was going to start going to the track, I would probably opt for one with a SNELL rating.

This subject can be quite touchy, but the most important thing you need to do, is buy a helmet that will fit your head properly (if it doesn't fit right, its not going to matter what rating it has). Make sure that it is comfortable too. Some people say you get what you pay for, but as you know from that article, even lower priced helmets offer, in the opinion of the article, adequate protection in typical motorcycle accidents.

If you plan on racing or do any Track days, Snell is used.

i bought a hjc c12 helmet. its dot and snell approved. its yellow/blk/slv to match my bike and they retail for 109. It fits my head correctly. Now the features aren't that great/ ie vents, antifogging. I will eventually get a shoei, but not for ease of mind, but for convience.
