Default 1st gear starting problem

Hey guys! I just have a quick question I was hoping you all could help with. Today I took my bike to gainesville florida (about an hour away) where I go to school at (go gators!). As I was almost there, about 3-4 lights away from where I was going to park my bike started giving me trouble. It happened at a red light and when I started to go, the bike sounded like it was going to stall, so I gave a little more gas and it didn't seem to be helping so I pull the gas way back and then after about 3-4 seconds it started to catch so to speak. Meaning it finally felt like the engine was getting some gas, because pulling the gas back didn't seem to register until I pulled it way back. The problem continued until I got there, then after I had left it parked for an hour or so, I went to go back home and it gave me the same trouble at every light I stoped at. And it only didthis after I came to a stop- and every single stop at that. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks!

Its a 2003 ninja 500r. That could be it- I filled up yesterday, but when I was coming home after filling up it wasn't doing it. In fact it didn't start doing it until nearly an hour into the next trip.

Make sure your venting is good at the gas cap. Air pressure in the tank will do strange things to fuel flow.
Next, check your fuel filter. There's all sorts of crap in gas these days. If you don't have an aftermarket filter in-line, get one.
Next, if it continues to do this for an extended period of time (and you're real bored) check the color deposit on your spark plugs. I'm guessing it's running lean, but again, strange things happen.
If there is residual gas in your tank from the winter months, empty it and start over with fresh. Gas seems to go sour really quickly anymore. (I seem to remember growing up you could leave gas in something; tractor, lawn mower, etc. all winter and never experience a problem.)
If it's rained and there's any chance of moisture being in your gas, empty the tank and start over.
Finally, there are some gas stations where I simply do not have good luck with gas in my bike. I try to stay with stations I can depend on for good gas.
My 2 cents...
