Cool 1980 kz1000 police interceptor

I got this bike 5 years ago and have never rode it, IT HAS BEEN A TASK AND A HALF.
KZP1000

I blew a plug that was stripped. I put another head on the bike, a kz1000 head off a 79 (LTD??).

seems to me that anything but police kz1000 parts will not work on the thing.

I have spent days trying to get it to run right, i got it running. but the valves wont adjust to get adequate compression, unless i put really small shims in it. this doesnt allow enough fuel on the intake but too much air. I put bigger jets in it. I had to restrict the air intake with customized filters (high performance foam and duct tape). I got it running. But the pilot screws for the air intake on the carbs are all the way in.

It still runs really lean. I got it almost good enough. I can ride it now. It has become a strange beast.

Looks like I am going to have to go back to the original police head because the police cams dont seem to jive with the kz1000 head.

The police bikes are also bored over .005 in so i dont know if the head off a kz1000 will work.

I have dubbed this bike "frankenstien"......it was dead but i am going to bring it back to life..... IT LIVES!!!

kz1000 VS kzp1000 WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON????

You should be able to get the original head repaired if the plug threads are all that's wrong with it. Then with the original head in place, the valve lift and timing should be correct.

Welcome to KF

heli-coil the plug opening. Sounds like you are having a bad time with that new head. Possibly needs a valve job since adjusting is not helping. And having the pilots all the way in is not going to last long if you want a properly running ride.

Double check the part numbers in your favorite fiche if the heads are compatible or not. I did not know about the overbore differences between the KZ and the KZ-P models. I have the 92 KZ-P
