I know this is like months too late but i think your calculations are off in step 12. Exhaust spec is .22~.31...if your measurement is .33 and yousub .12you come up with .21, .33-.12=.21 . But even then you are .01 under spec range for exhaust. Had me confused at first.

Here's a place to get the shim kits cheaper. Sometimes you can measure and swap shims depending on your clearances.

I was reading the thread and realized there are two types shim styles.
Shim over bucket and shim under bucket.
Does anybody know what style an 89 600r has?
I have some ticking in my top end.So I want to fix it.
Also somebody told me it was the lifters. How do I adjust those?

Thanks

I don't know if anyone is still following this thread but here is my .02. I just finished the valve adjustment on my 04 zx-10r at the 15k interval. The guidelines in this thread were extremely helpful however, I found that once I started taking things apart I realized that there is much more to it than what you read here. The engine stuff was pretty straight forward and not much different than old school aside from the tolerances and the precision with which everything is put together. My concern was really in getting to the engine. I had to remove all the plastics not just the lower and mid. Everything must come off, then then entire fuel injection system must be removed, parts of the frame and even the radiator had to come off (all hoses remained connected), just to get the wind guard off the top of the engine. It was a complete mess and I was wondering if I would ever get it back together again. While I was in there I also replaced the air cleaner with a K&N and changed the plugs. The aftermarket shim kits are not complete and you won't know what or how many of what sizes you need until you take it all apart. Some of my tolerances required that I use the kawasaki parts which can be ordered in .25 increments and not just .50 increments as in the aftermarket pieces. At least 8 of the shims needed smaller replacement due to tight tolerances and several more were at the limit. I waited 2 weeks for kawasaki to get me some new shims and they didn't ever send some of the odd sizes so I just made due with what I had and swapped some around. If I had to say how long the actual labor was, I would estimate at least 2 full days, but then I am rather meticulous and maybe a bit overthinking it. Would I do it again? Well you figure that after the filter, oil, plugs, downtime, hassels with people you don't know or trust, not knowing whether or not the job got done right, and saving $1000.00-hell yeah I'd do it again. Besides, if I couldn't put it back together I could probably piece it out on Ebay and make enough to buy a new one anyway.

Depends which model 600r you have. Some had tappet adjusters that required only a 10mm wrench, small flat blade screwdriver and feeler gauge. You could adjust them without removing the cams.
