Set timing after replacing rings
Hi guys,
I am new to working on bikes, and have this old 83 KLX250, it had the head and carbie rebuilt before I got it, but they didnt do the rings, and it was blowing smoke a treat.
I am waiting delivery or a ring kit, and pretty much know where everything goes to put it back together (I think) but have no idea how to get the timing for the valves right, and REALLY dont want to mess it up and bend a valve (which is why the original head was rebuilt, because the previous owner got it wrong!)
Hope someone can help, thanks in advance.

well, if you haven't removed the head yet, you can remove the stator covor and turn the crank with a wrench until you see the timing marks on the cams line up (usually, theres 4, but i have NO idea whats on your bike ) and then look for the T mark onthe rotor.. there should be a clear mark of some sort where ever that mark ends.. it could be a case half separation or a mark inthe case itself acting as a poiter.. if nothing lines up, try spinning it another180 or so and see what lines come into play.
i really wish i had info for ya.. waiting for dragone 19 to chime in.. he'll most certainly have a book or something in his ridiculous library of shop manuals!!
again, sorry for a weak and vague post, but welcome to KF!!

Thanks Whitehendrix.. unfortunately, I was stupid, and removed the head after marking the chain etc with black permanent marker (which I have to tell you are not permanent when they come int o contact with oil...... )

Get a manual. It's not really a good idea to start stripping any engine without one. You'll need the torque settings for all the bolts as well as valve timing and valve clearance data and cam chain tension setting and.........
