Chain Adjustment on 94 and up 500R's
Adjusted my chain last night, thought I'd post the steps in case anyone else needed the info.
1. Put the bike on its centrestand
2. Turn the rear wheel to find the tightest spot on the chain, mark this spot and then turn wheel so that the mark is on the chain's lower run, mid way between the sprockets
3. Lift up and then press down on chain, measuring the distance the chain moves vertically
4. You should have 1 and 3/8 to 1 and 9/16 of an inch of free play in the chain
5. To adjust, remove the cotter pin and loosen the rear axle nut

6. Loosen the drive chain adjuster locknut on both sides of the wheel (mine took a 12mm wrench)
7. Turn each adjuster nut (took a 14mm) an equal number of turns to obtain correct drive chain slack

8. Check the alignment notch, ensure it is pointing to the same mark on each side of the swing arm
9. Tighten driven chain adjuster locknuts
9. Tighten rear axle nut to 81 ft-lb
10. Install new cotter pin and bend ends over completely
And voila you have now tightened your chain!! Now grab a beer and give yourself a pat on the back!

glad u mentioned about the tightspot, factory manual doesn't even mention it. If your chain is pretty warn it will have a pretty noticable tight spot and if the chains not adjusted properly, it will have alot of noise and vibration when you go down the road.
