81 Kawasaki KZ550 shuts off at 5000/6000 RPM's

ok i figured out the problem with it cutting off at 5k rpms and the rattling went away.... there was a broken wire off one of the coils and also i replaced the spark plug cables they were looking iffy..... there is still some smoke at start up but it gosaway.... the only other thing is now it doesent want to run with the choke off... would that be caused because i have the air filter box disconnected still?

Congrats on the fixes so far.
most likely you are burning lean without your air box.

It could be, or it could be that your main jets and emulsion tubes aren't as clean as you thought. Bad float levels will do things like that, as will having the circlip in the wrong groove on the main needle in the vacuum slide. From memory you want it to be in the 2nd one from the top, but the standard KZ550C1 has a fixed needle position, so check things out but be careful not to rip the diaphragms on top of the slides.

ok i may be a mix of the float levles and the air box because i had to adugust the levles on the floats because there wasent enugh gas in the float bowls.... so if there still off and with out the air box thats probley it then. thanks

Nice to hear the good news.
I don't know what I was thinking on coolant
I had an early 80's KZ750LTD so should know better. I may have been PUI.
The 750 was my 2nd bike and rode the living hell out of it. I still can't believe it survived the abuse I put it through...and that I am still living to remember it...and only really crashed it once, on a rutted dirt desert trail at 1:30 am trying to find another big steel suds barrel (shouldn't have been on it).
In any case, good to see a new member helping another new member find and fix the problem. Nice going DA. Keep it up. Good to have you here!
