1980 Z1R Carbs/airbox removal
Hi all, Im trying to remove the carbs off my newly purchased 1980 Z1R for a rebuild but there seems to be very little space between the air box/filter housing and the carbs. Any tricks or suggestions. Clymer manual is pretty vague. Thanks.

First thing. Welcome to KF
Second, buy a new set of carb boots
Then remove the rack. Because you will need flexible boots to reinstall the rack. At this age, they are due anyway.
My KZ requires the battery box and air box to be slid back some, it was still a tight fit, but you can still man handle the rack out of the stiff boots from there. The new boots are well worth it on reinstall. Hook up your cables, verify your carb synch and you are golden. Safe riding

To remove the carburetors more easily, and I have done it many times:
Make sure you have drained all gas from the carburetors and disconnected and remove the petroltank.
Than remove the aircleanerfilter out of the aircleanerbox and with a hairdryer blowing hot air into the aircleaner chamber you will heaten, and thereby soften, the rubber carb boots giving you more space to remove the casb assembly.
And yes, buy a new set of carb boots. Mounting the carb assembly will be more easily.
By the way removing a carb assembly from a Z KAWA is peanuts compared removing this thing from a GPX 600 Ninja. Thats realy tricky with hardly any space at all.
