Default Choke and EFI?

I picked up a new 2007 Nomad and when going through the MOM, I was struck by a bike with an EFI having a choke too (plus and idle adjustment screw). I was under the understanding that EFI would handle the adjustments for cold starts. I had a Bully C50 and didn't need a choke due to the EFI. Can anyone fill me in on this and give me some rules of thumb when each should be used. I rode last week in 38 degrees and the bike fired up and ran fine without using the choke. Sorry fo my ignorance, I just don't get it.

Thanks

I have a '07 1600 Mean Streak, which is fuel injected and also has a choke. I never had to use the choke (even in the 20's) until I got an after market intake. Replacing the intake made me take out two solenoids that were under the right-side "air filter cover". It doesn't actually cover a filter; just these solenoids. I have been told that it is partly due to the removal of them and the dramatic increase in the amount of air being sucked in is the reason I now have to use the choke.

I had a 2001 1500 fi and never used the choke. I did idle it up in the winter and down in the summer. Loved that bike and love my 07 Nomad even more.

I have an 05 Nomad EFI with the choke. When I went to the dealer I asked ther service department and the Manager said that Kawasaki put a choke in so that people who live in cold or high altitudes would be able to get a clean start. He said the choke is not needed unless your bike has a cold start issue. Otherwise you can disregard the choke. I like the fact that you can adjust the idle on the bike, especially after installing new pipes, Power Commander and a Big Air Kit. You will need to adjust the idle and you have easy access to it. The Nomad is an awesome big. Kawasaki did good job.

Thanks FreakN... That was a big help. I live in MA where now it is cold but I've riden it three times without any seeming need for the choke and couldn't rationalize the two but what you said made sense and I agree its better to have the option then not.

It's not really a choke, just a fast idle device that opens the throttle a bit.

I'm guessing that this fast idle doesn't kick down automatically like a choke once the temperature becomes operating level. Also, it appears that after replacing the fast idle cold start cable, that the control has three steps to the adjustment. Off, with the **** pressed all the way in, one step up to a lower idle increase, and another step up for the higher idle increase.

Is this accurate, or have my adjustments just 'worn'.

When I removed the old, broken fast idle cable, I noticed that it was kinked, binding at the connection to the lever on the throttle body. I feel that this was affecting my throttle response that had been kind of flaky lately.

I'll keep an eye on it, get back later.
