1600 Nomad Engine Noise
Hello guys and Gals
I signed up today in hopes to find some answers or possible answers to a problem I have been having with my 2008 Nomad 1600.
Some history:
As of today the bike turned over 50000 miles
I did the cam chain extender job around 25000 miles
The noise I am questioning started before the cam chain job.
I have been using 10/40 synthetic since 3500 miles which I change out on the average every 4000 to 5000 miles.
Since this noise started I got in the habit of letting the bike warm up for a bit before going on a ride. Typically 95% of the time allowing the engine to warm up reduced and/or removed this sound.
Over the last month this noise has gotten worse and more so pronounced since the weather is now cooler in the AM.
Also now the warm up procedure is not as affective.
Basically I have recorded a youtube video which will allow you to hear what I am referring to.
At the beginning I have the bike at idle, then I crank up the RPM's and you will hear a fast pace "tat tat tat" which seems to be coming from both jugs.
Within the next month I plan on tearing her down and do the following:
1: replace the oil filters in the rocker arm area which should allow more oil flow to the rocker arm area.
2: remove the rocker arm assembly and inspect the HLA's
3: reprime the HLA's and/or replace them.
4: inspect the top end, cam chains and anything visible after removing the rocker arm assembly.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Key point - where is the noise coming from? If you cannot determine it from just listening around, get a mechanic's stethoscope and place the probe around the engine. You should be able to locate the loudest point and that is where the issue is located.
If it is in the cam cover area of the head it is the valves. I think that engine has hydraulic adjusters so it may be one has crud in it that has caused it to collapse. If they are solid, the valves need shimmed (but I still think they had hydraulics). I have a 550 with two valves that are .001 out of spec (not enough to take everything apart to deal with it) and I can locate which valves using my mechanic's stethoscope, tracing the sound to the loudest point.
If it is in the cam drive area your extenders are not long enough or the tensioners are being pushed in and out. If they are the ratchet set up that isn't unusual as it might sound. You'll find the KLX250s and 650s regularly have the ratchet style tensioner fail to hold properly, not to mention the ZL/ZG/ZX900/1000. Their fix is to use manual tensioners. Some riders have done the same on the Vulcan 1500. I know, I make the manual ones and sold some sets to 1500 riders. I think they can be used in the 1600 too. They don't take much attention either.
Regardless, locate the source of the noise and figure out what possibly can be the problem in that area.
