Bike stalls in first?

Default Bike stalls in first?

After finally replacing my rearset, I was getting ready to go for a ride, I cranked the bike up in neutral. At first, I couldn't downshift to first, the bike would remain in neutral, no matter how hard a kick i'd give the gear shift... I released the clutch, gave the clutch cable a little tug and then tried again, and this time (with the clutch engaged all the way) the bike lurched forward and stalled out. I put it back into neutral, and again it stalled out going into first. Now the bike is off, and again, will not go down to first gear. The FI and change oil lights lit up, but im sure thats just because it was stalling out correct? What do I need to do? thanks!

Will the bike start up while you hold the clutch lever all the way in? Does it lurch forward when you do this? The FI and oil light will be on with the key in the on position. Don't be stomping on that gear shift lever because that can lead to broken parts.

The shifting into first while sitting still is normal for most bikes. With the engine running, you either have to 1) release the clutch & re-apply, then engage first gear or 2) roll the bike forward with the clutch pulled, and engage first. Bikes don't like to engage / switch gears while sitting still...although I've never experienced a problem engaging first, I have had trouble downshifting at a standstill.

The cause of it killing the engine when engaging first is a dragging clutch. It either needs adjusted or replaced. Adjust most of the freeplay out of the cable, leaving a couple of mm between the handle and base when released. If that doesn't cure it, you likely have warped clutch plates. Replace the fibers and plates as a set if that's the case.

thanks for the fast replies, i went down shortly before you guys wrote and saw that the screw thats where the cable and clutch lever meet is broken, could this cause the stalling/lurching? If so, how much would just that screw cost (or what's its name so I can look it up) thanks!

The clutch must be fully engaged to shift into first, adjust the clutch so that it works properly. Also since you went down on that side make sure your shifter is adjusted properly as well.

awesome! 92009 is what I was referring to, mine broke midway, so half is in and half is out, so I think this would explain why the clutch cable wont tighten all the way. i just ordered it, so we shall see in a couple days!

Oh and is the clutch handle suppose to be able to wiggle? or would fixing said screw help it not wiggle?

By the simplicity of the design you cant avoid a little wiggle, but if it seems excessive you might need to check everything to make sure its tightened down.

For future reference, any bike should easily shift from neutral into either first or second while stationary.

If it won't, and the gearbox is otherwise OK, suspect the clutch adjustment - usually the cable free play - before anything else. Your broken cable adjuster at the lever is the cause of your problem. When it's fixed, adjust the cable to have about 2mm of free play at the lever.

The gear box doesn't like to shift between gears while stationary because of the design of the sequential shift box. It depends on a pawl operating the shift forks by turning a cam or drum, and then freeing off to reposition itself for the next shift. If the bike isn't moving the shift pawl can't reposition itself.

BTW - the clutch must be fully disengaged - that's lever pulled in - to shift into first. If it's fully engaged (lever out) it won't shift.
