Default 250 or 500?

yo, i'm new to KF. been looking around it for a couple days and signed up today

I've been looking to get a 250 because its a beginner bike and i'm still in my permit stages but im wondering if i'd would suit me or not. so im thinking of getting a 500 for a little more power. I'm 6-6'1 and 250-260 pounds. and my main concern is that with the 250 i'm going to outgrow it way too quick.. but i dont want something id be afraid to ride :\ My cousin was teaching me a little bit on his CBR600 and a little flick sent the rpms really high and it was kinda intimidating o.o
So. my question.. 250 or 500? and Why? please post in detail =) i like to read peoples opinions. and i'd love to see some Pros and Cons for both bikes ^^

sry if this question has been asked before ; ;

Thank you

First of all - welcome to KF! (if I haven't already done so!)

Now as for your question......I am biased as I started out on a 500. When I was looking, I had originally considered the 250.....but a lot of folks said that I may 'outgrow' it or get 'bored' with it. I did not really take these remarks into consideration, until my dad said it. I really trust his judgement, so after that - I decided to pursue the 500.

Now you will get people telling you the same thing about the 500, you'll get bored of it, blah, blah, blah. I have had mine for two years now, I am not the least bit bored with - in fact I find every trip out, I enjoy my little bike even more!

On the 500 you will get good gas mileage (even better with the 250). I find the 500 very comfortable for me (I'm 5'4" and weigh 120) - I have no problems getting my feel flat footed on the ground, and I am able to move the bike around with ease. I find the seating position to be very comfortable as you aren't bent over the tank - it is more upright. The furthest I have gone in one day on my bike was 200km - other than my butt being sore - I had no other complaints.

In the looks department - the 250 is a lot sportier looking than the 500. So if that is something that is important to you - you may prefer the 250.

The 500 has plenty enough power for running on the highways and if you need a little extra 'oomph' to get by something, its there. Its a great bike in the twisites too!!! All in all, I found the 500 to be a nice combination of being not too scary but still fun as heck!

Good luck in your search and keep us posted on what you decide!

Go with the 500.
The 500 will be much more comfortable at freeway speeds. You have to rev the 250 so hard in traffic to keep out of people's way that the fuel economy advantage is negligible. I've asked a few 250 riders what kind of mileage they're getting and many actually did worse than my 500.

But riding on the 250 does teach you how to keep your momentum high around corners...

Either one would be good, but I suspect the 500 would be better in all conditions for you.

If you are over 200 lbs, you should really consider the 500. It has enough power to keep you going, and at freeway speeds you won't feel like you are killing the machine just to keep up.

I was considering the 250 for my first bike, but I am so glad I took the 500, trust me, it isn't like the CBR, it won't flick and fly, but in the twisty's, you'll pass up a CBR (with a little practice!).

Safe riding!

There is nothing wrong with a 250. It is EXTREMELY user friendly; I get about 64 mpg minimum. (I'm not easy on it either) It handles VERY well. I have heard about 250R's able to out-corner much larger bikes! If you want to do a bit of highway riding, this bike is definitely NOT a good choice though. Your *** will be very sore and numb after 1 1/2 hours because of the hard seat on this bike. When you're going about 75mph, your RPM's will be around 10-10.5k.

In my opinion, the 250R makes a great city bike that you'll enjoy using around town, but get a 500 or larger if you plan on mostly higher speed riding.
