Assuming your are getting spark and fuel, pull the cover and check vavle clearances. The KLX valves have a habit of tightening up. In mild cases, the engine is hard to start. In the worst case, it wont start at all.

I just purchased a 98 KLX 300. After changing the plug I've found the bike cranks on the first or second try (when cold.) However, when hot, it may take up to eight or ten kicks (if it cranks at all.) Often when the bike is hot I have to let it sit a few minutes before it will crank.

This is my first dirt bike in over 20 years so I'm sort of a retread newbie... any suggestions?

Frank - you may be running rich if it starts easily in cold weather. When you get it running (after 8-10 kicks) in warm weather does it run well throughout the rpm range? If it runs OK throughout, but hard to start - maybe just your idle (gas mixture) - screw it in CW and see if that helps. If it's rough throughout - maybe look at your jetting/ needle position (needle 1 slot higher, jets 1 size leaner, etc.)
