Hello,

I own a 98 KLX 300 that has developed a problem during my last ride. Anything over half throttle causes the bike to bog and back-fire and will produce some black smoke out the pipe. I was riding in an extremely wet and muddy environment. I have cleaned the filter element, cleaned the carb, replaced the plug and removed the cam cover to make sure the chain didn’t jump a tooth. All to no avail. Anyone have any suggestion as to what the problem might be? It has the Mukini carb with stroker pipe. Thank You.

Well first of all, welcome to the forums. Second, when you say you cleaned the carb, what did you actually do? Did you pull the jets? Did you remove the float to make sure its not filling up with gas (pin hole?) Sounds like its getting too much gas. Keep us informed, and watch for more suggestions in here. When I cleaned the Carb all as I did was brush the inside with some solvent followed by compressed air in the orifices.

I still have the stock CV carb so I put that one on and the bike ran as it should. Since I knew that I definitely had a Carb problem I cleaned the pumper more thoroughly by removing the pilot and main jets and the needle valve, spraying some carb cleaner in there and then compressed air. Put the pumper back on the bike and it runs as it should. I guess looks are deceiving I thought the carb looked pretty clean. Oh well lesson learned. I am using an inline filter and I have one of those K&N elements. But obviously something got in there. Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.
