550 won't run

550 won't run

I have a 1984 550 that runs perfect until you put it in the water. Runs like its down on power and if it stalls does not want to start. Any ideas?

clogged waterbox maybe? could be loading the pump and bringing revs down..

hows the water flow looking on the stand? are you dry running it, or have a hose connected to it?

also sound like a fuel issue at the same time..
does it act stupid under and % of load,but why out of the water, revs clean? could be a plugged carb jet or sticking float..
